Exposure to dangerous chemicals may often result in permanent injuries. Such chemicals may be found in the food we eat, the water we drink, the clothes we wear or even the air we breathe. Exposure to such chemicals can cause injuries such as birth defects, damage to the nervous system, systemic allergic reactions, brain injuries or cancer. You can be exposed to a chemical in three main ways:

• Inhalation - breathing in chemical vapors or air with a chemical in it
• Ingestion - swallowing a chemical in food, soil, or water
• Dermal - a chemical soaking through your skin (only some chemicals like gasoline or solvents can do this)
• Silica dust

Depending on the type of exposure, the symptoms may include:

• Abdominal pain 
• Bright red or Bluish skin and lips 
• Breathing difficulty 
• Convulsions (seizures) 
• Dizziness 
• Headache 
• Hives, itching, swelling, nausea, vomiting, or weakness resulting from an allergic reaction 
• Irritability 
• Pain where the skin has come in contact with the toxic substance 
• Rash, blisters, burns on the skin 
• Unconsciousness

Dangerous materials are everywhere, including:

• lead
• mold
• Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO)
• toluene, formaldehyde and dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
• benzene
